English Language Arts

Taught by Miss Chana Ungar

Welcome to Bnos Yaakov’s English Language Arts Program! The goal this year is to develop a confidence in the girls so that they are unafraid to read and write. We hope to produce active readers and professional writers.

Our curriculum is divided into two very equal parts: Literature and Writing workshop. We have each class twice a week. The literature we read influences the quality of writing we produce. Grammar and vocabulary are integrated into our writing syllabus as well.

Literature

Unit theme: This term we’re focusing on the role of an individual vs. the pressure of conforming to society. Next term we will focus on racism, and last term we will be introducing an exciting unit on children’s literature. A small sampling of the literature works:

Projects: The girls will create a portfolio project that will include a collage, a poem, and an artwork in connection to themselves. Third term the girls will be creating their own children’s book.

Writing Workshop

Unit Theme: We are focusing on journalism this semester. The girls are working on news, feature and editorial articles. Next term we will focus on poetry; how to read it and how to write it. Third term will be connected to the literature unit on children’s literature.

Projects: In conjunction with computer lab, students will publish an illustrated newspaper in December. Third term each girl will create her own children’s book. In addition, there are weekly journal assignments.

I’m excited to teach such an action-packed curriculum this year, and I hope the girls are just as excited to learn it! They are an enthusiastic, fun group, and every class I teach erupts into fascinating discussions. Please feel free to contact me with any comments or concerns you may have.
