Biology

Taught by Mrs. M. Rosenberg

The study of biology provides students with an internal view of how the human body functions. The biology curriculum of Bnos Yaakov is in accordance with the highly accredited NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) standards.

The standards promote understanding core science content as well as viewing the world and solving problems using a scientific approach.  Towards this end, students begin each science unit with a major inquiry; they proceed to learn all the available information on the unit and then begin to formulate their unique response through   hypothes’, reasoning and experiments.  Throughout each unit, their science learning is enhanced with a variety of workshops, activities, and current science articles.

Course Overview:

The biology course provides the students with an insightful view of the way the human body works. Biology learning goals are in accordance with the NSTA goals and standards for High School Biology. The course is geared to helping our students think like scientists and to tackle questions that they have or are posed to them in a scientific manner. To that end, students are encouraged to formulate responses to a major inquiry concept introduced in the beginning of every unit. As the unit progresses, learning is enhanced with a variety of workshops, activities, and interesting science journal articles.

Areas of Study:

  • The Cell
  • Digestive System
  • Photosynthesis
  • Circulatory System
  • Respiratory System
  • Nervous System
  • The Five Senses
  • Endocrine System
  • Musculoskeletal System
  • Genetics

Objectives:

  • To know the components of the body and understand how their bodies function
  • To learn how to inquire and investigate the nature of all living things  through groups
  • To  independently formulate solutions to their science questions

Skills:

As our students investigate different body phenomena, there are a variety of skills they will be learning in the process:

  • Honing scientific
  • Reading and understanding complex science literature
  • Formulating comprehensive written responses to text based questions
  • Laboratory skills such as using a microscope, making wet slides of specimens, staining specimens and paper chromatography

The study of biology is a study of the wonders and the miracles that occur each day in all of our bodies. It is a privilege to be able to teach such an inspiring subject to your daughters and see their appreciation of their bodies and to Hakodesh Boruch Hu.
